  • An interview with Quinn Smith conducted via Zoom by Naomi Goldson on October 23, 2023. Quinn Smith (Chickasaw Nation and Choctaw) is a Native American man who recently graduated from Duke University. He is currently working to reclaim Native Lands through Land Guardianship work. He served as NAISA president while at Duke and navigated a resistant administration to create, with the help of past alumni, a Native Cluster Hiring Initiative. This initiative secures 10 Native faculty to be integrated into different departments to build a diverse and robust Native community on campus. Courtney Lewis was the first hire of this initiative and now runs the recruitment for Native hires. Quinn helped foster community during his time as NAISA and created a foundation in which future leadership would be able to use past knowledge instead of starting from square one, this is known as “transitional documents.” He is currently using the medium of documentaries to tell Native stories through Southern Exposure and has produced multiple documentaries about Native ways of life. ...
